Barre3 Boise client Charlotte Salviejo reflects on her postpartum love story with barre3.
We met in January 2024, and it’s been an evolving romance ever since. I’m kidding, except I’m not really. During each class, I fall more in love, and I leave even more enthusiastic about barre3.
I love working out, and I love the fitness community
My first few jobs were in gyms, and I’ve always loved trying new workout classes. Hiking Table Rock and wandering through Camel’s Back Park were some of my favorite weekly outings with friends. All of that to say, before I got pregnant, physical activity was a constant in my life.
My plan during pregnancy was to continue my same routine and just make modifications as needed. What I did not anticipate was throwing up in my car before each workout—no matter the time of the day. I threw up every day until I was more than 32 weeks pregnant. The throwing up combined with the exhaustion left me with little energy for classes or intense workouts. My “fitness routine” turned into incline treadmill walking and a few machine exercises. My focus became mobility, and I set my hopes to “I’ll get fit again postpartum.”
Postpartum fitness before barre3
I was quickly humbled the first time I went on a walk with my 15-day-old son. I didn’t expect to be easily winded and needed a break only a few minutes in.
When the time came for me to return to workouts at the gym, I made sure to reserve time on my husband’s calendar. That time generally came at the end of a very long day at home breastfeeding a cluster-feeding newborn. I had so much motivation but zero energy to match. When my energy did increase, I found little joy in my workouts. It felt like another thing on my long to-do list, and the results were slow to see. I wrestled with this until I was nine months postpartum.
At nine months postpartum, I needed something more
I needed community. To find joy in my fitness journey again. Something to look forward to. And I needed somewhere with childcare. My husband was incredibly supportive and always prioritized ensuring I could go to the gym. However, it meant I got to go when he got home from work which was sometimes well past six. By the time we traded “shift notes,” the baby would be due for another feeding, and I wouldn’t get out the door until late.
One night during a scrolling session
I saw posts on Instagram seeking childcare team members for the new barre3 location in Barber Station. WAIT a minute, there’s going to be a barre3 in Barber Station? Quick Google Maps search confirmed that the new barre3 location was only 10 minutes from my house. WAIT a second, barre3 has childcare? I scoured the website to learn all of the details I could about barre3 Eagle and Boise and their Play Lounge.
Signed site unseen
In the past I had attended barre classes, so I thought, “what the heck, why not?!” I took advantage of a stellar deal and signed up for a membership online over the holidays. My membership included unlimited classes at both locations and childcare for the first six months.
First-date-kind-of nervous
When the time came for me to attend my first class, I prayed the entire way there because I was so nervous. The nerves came from the thought that I would embarrass myself. I was nervous my baby would cry the entire time, and I’d have to leave the class. My prayer was that Luca would be loved on, feel safe, and at ease. When I walked into the beautiful Eagle location, I was warmly welcomed by name. A sweet gal gave me a tour of the studio and showed me where I could change my baby before the class. I walked to the clean, toy-filled Play Lounge and dropped off my baby with two extremely kind women. The studio was full of light and a mat was waiting for me.
An answered prayer
After an incredible class, I left red faced to collect my child who was as chill as a cucumber. My eyes actually welled up with real tears of relief when they told me that he didn’t cry at all. My heart was full of gratitude that “THIS MIGHT REALLY WORK!” And, ultimately barre3 has continued to be an answered prayer. I’ve met the nicest women in the barre3 studio walls. Some of them I knew before and have run into; others I’ve met there.
Sweetening the deal
Barre3 Eagle is conveniently located by some of my favorite local eateries: Boise Juice Company, Guru Donuts, and KB’s Burrito. These incredible establishments make for perfect pre- or post-workout dates with my little guy. I enjoy a gluten- and dairy-free donut on a Saturday morning after a class, and Luca loves chips and salsa in the evening. Similarly, barre3 Boise is surrounded by stunning walking paths and is only steps away from all that Bown Crossing has to offer. I’m already looking forward to post-class walks in the summer sun to Flatbread.
Gratitude for barre3
Barre3 has brought joy to my postpartum fitness journey, and I am so grateful. My son is known and adored by the Play Lounge team; this allows me to be mindful during class. I look forward to time in the studio, and I leave feeling recharged. I’m grateful that my body grew and birthed a baby boy. And, I’m grateful for barre3 for helping me take care of my body as I continue to raise my baby.
