Give Your Nails a Fresh Start
Did you know that the long-term effects of traditional nail polish can be damaging to your health? Traditional nail polish is overflowing with harmful ingredients.
Over time, polishes with these ingredients can make your nails weak and brittle, but that’s not the worst of it. The toxic chemicals in traditional nail polish—for example, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde—have been linked to things as annoying as skin rashes and as serious as cancer.
The levels of these chemicals in each brush of nail polish may be small, but the exposure adds up over time. According a study done by Duke University and Environmental Working Group, we are absorbing at least one hormone-disrupting chemical every time we get our nails done. Multiply that by the number of weeks you wear your favorite shade of burgundy—and yikes!
Healthy Nail Care
If your nails are damaged or brittle from the toxins in traditional polish, consider giving them a break. Going au naturel for a few weeks can help your nails breathe and heal.
Once your nails are ready again for polish, there are some great natural options that won’t cause damage. When searching for a natural polish you like, you’ll want to look for the “5-free” label, which means that the polish doesn’t contain the five most common toxins from traditional polish—DBP, toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, and camphor.
