NEW TO BARRE3? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
At barre3, we love meeting you exactly where you are. Wherever you fall on the fitness spectrum, whether you’re an I’m-not-into-exercise type or a seasoned athlete, the barre3 class is designed to work for you. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind as you kick off your barre3 practice.
Each Barre3 Class Combines Strength Conditioning, Cardio, and Mindfulness
We love addressing both strength and cardio in single, powerful moves. Let’s use Plank as an example. This is a posture that requires your body to be almost completely still, but that stillness takes incredible strength. Oh, and you know that out-of-breath feeling when you come out of Plank? That’s your heart working hard to stabilize your muscles.
Along with strength work and cardio, we weave mindfulness throughout the whole class. Your instructor will guide you to stay present in your body. By practicing mindfulness in class, you’re deepening your connection to your muscles and the different ways they’re supporting you.
Guided Breathwork Will Enhance Your Workout
With mindfulness comes an attention to breath. Our instructors will cue you throughout class to return to your breath. In turn, you’ll focus on and time your inhales and exhales with each move. Your breath empowers you, and using it strategically will help carry you through even the most challenging postures.
This holistic approach really comes together at the end of class, where we’ll lead you through a few minutes of guided breathwork. These moments of stillness are just as important as the more high-intensity portions of class. Your breath fuels every part of your workout, and by taking these mindful breaths, you gain a sense of grounding while also feeling refreshed and energized for the rest of your day.
We Are Obsessed With Balance
“Balance” is today’s wellness buzzword, but it’s been a key tenet of barre3 since we opened our flagship studio 10 years ago. The “3” in barre3 is a symbol of balance, and our mission is to teach you to be balanced in body. “We focus on guiding the body to a more balanced state, but balance isn’t an end point,” says VP of Research and Development Lisa Schale-Drake. “Instead, we celebrate our imbalances; we look at them, acknowledge them, and honor them.”
Imbalances are not failures; they’re opportunities. They’re an invitation to examine our circumstances, tune into our inherent strength, and make changes with confidence and clarity. When we become more aware of our imbalances and where these imbalances exist, we can learn to be more successful in our bodies.
Let’s return to the example of Plank. Maybe you’re starting to feel pain in your shoulder. That’s an imbalance, and after noticing this, you could react in one of two ways. You could push through this pain, becoming frustrated and potentially exacerbating the pain. Or, you could lower to your forearms, doing the move down on your knees. Another great option is taking Plank up at the barre. Whichever option you choose, you’re making those adjustments and acknowledging the imbalance without judgment.
By embracing modifications and listening to your body, you learn to focus inward and become your own best teacher.
We Love When You Make Choices For You
Balance looks and feels different for everyone, and when you come into your first barre3 class, you’ll be encouraged and guided to make the moves your own.
Modifications are alternatives to a posture that target the same muscle groups but may work better for your body’s specific needs. No modification is necessarily easier or harder; it’s all about providing you with the tools and options that allow you to connect with your body.
When you listen to your body, you’re tapping into your inherent strength, and when you make modifications, you’re giving your body what it needs. Sometimes, you need to drop the weights, and other times you’ll find yourself wanting to go lower in your Sumo Squats or maybe deeper in your Carousel Horse. These needs are ever-changing and can be different from what you needed yesterday or last week. By being present in your body, you’re making choices that are grounded in your truth and that will support you both in and beyond the studio.
Our Community Supports You Every Step Of The Way
And the best part? When you come into class, you’ll step into a community that encourages you to make these choices for yourself.
“We’re really proud of the culture at barre3,” says Lisa. “It’s a community that supports one another in class and in every aspect of life. You won’t feel like you’re in competition with your neighbor or excluded because of your ability level. We celebrate our differences, and one of my favorite things about being an instructor is looking around and seeing the diversity of movement in class. I can tell by the energy in the room that we’re all equally achieving the same sensations in our bodies.”
The main thing to know if you’re just starting your barre3 practice? Come as you are, and be ready to meet yourself with curiosity and gratitude for what your body can do. We’ll be here cheering you on.
