THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A BARRE3 INSTRUCTOR? HOW (AND WHY) TO TAKE THE LEAP.
Have you thought about becoming a barre3 instructor but, for one reason or another, haven’t signed up for training yet? Meghan Gieber, instructor at barre3 San Mateo and life coach, has some advice to help you take the leap.
If you’ve considered becoming a bare3 instructor but haven’t signed up for training yet, my hunch is that you might be experiencing one or two common hurdles. Don’t worry: If a bit of inertia has set in, that’s normal! But if you feel right at home when you take a barre3 class and daydream about being the one behind the microphone, helping others find joy in movement, here’s some inspiration to help get you to the next step of the process.
It starts with overcoming potential hurdles you might be facing.
Hurdle 1: You’re telling yourself that you’re too busy.
Between your career, responsibilities, and personal life, it’s hard to make time for anything else these days. I completely empathize. I work for a lightning-speed Series A startup in Silicon Valley, where I juggle multiple hats, including being a life coach, a dog mom, a proactive friend, and, recently, a fiancée. People often ask me how I make time for barre3, or why I teach at all considering my full schedule.
The strange thing about adding barre3 to my life is that it actually slowed it down. Instead of operating at a sprint at all times, teaching makes me accountable to staying present with myself and my clients, and it slows down my mind and body a lot. My compressed schedule has room to breathe multiple times each week.
Being super busy might be the exact reason your heart keeps coming back to teaching. It’s a reprieve from your otherwise chaotic life.
Hurdle 2: You’re reluctant to go beyond your comfort zone.
Anything outside of our comfort zone feels vulnerable. You’re welcoming a new side of you that’s yet to be discovered, and you don’t know who lives on the other side of getting certified. That feeling is totally normal. In fact, I think most barre3 instructors felt nerves before training, questioning (even for a moment) our greatness and strength.
Vulnerability is the best invitation of all. You get to show up without judgement and try your best. You get to step away from the familiar and into a situation that’s going to help you grow and become a better version of yourself. Diving straight into your vulnerability is where personal magic happens.
Another reason to get past those initial hurdles? The incredible benefits! Here’s what I love about being a barre3 instructor (and what I think you’ll love, too).
Connecting with your barre3 community instantly alleviates stress.
I’ve become close with the front-desk staff, instructors, and clients, who all greet me with hugs and smiles before class. Nothing else matters outside of those doors. There’s no greater escape than lifting up a room full of people who come to take your class.
You get to lead.
I absolutely love getting on the mic and saying things that make clients feel strong and inspired, and evoking laughter. When I show up as a leader, I encourage others to do their best and trust themselves. Leading is a powerful tool.
Curating playlists is creative.
For music lovers, each barre3 playlist is like being in a kid in a candy store. Discovering new songs while crafting playlists is a creative outlet that helps define your teaching style. I’ve been exposed to new artists I wouldn’t have learned about had it not been for barre3, and I listen to them all the time now.
You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment.
Before teaching, there was a zero-percent chance I was waking up for a 6 a.m. class. But now I love teaching at 6 a.m. By 7 a.m., I’ve completed a workout and have the rest of the morning to do things for myself before most people wake up. I’m accountable to this early-morning routine now because if I don’t show up at 6 a.m., there would be no class. Everyone else’s time and energy would be wasted, and I would never let them down!
Three words: post-class afterglow.
There is no feeling quite like looking around at the studio after the three closing breaths to see people smiling, saying thank you, and looking satisfied after their workout. This afterglow makes me excited to teach every single time.
I sleep better.
When I teach multiple classes and take other instructors’ classes for inspiration each week, I sleep well because my mind feels calm, and my body wants to rest. I’ve exerted lots of energy throughout the day and easily get the zzz’s my body craves.
So there you have it. Being a barre3 instructor is full of benefits! Once you push past your hurdles and say yes, I’m confident that it’ll be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
You got this!
