Studio Owner Spotlight: Megan Hurley
A former high school English teacher, barre3 Fayetteville owner Megan Hurley is a passionate educator at heart. She loves helping her clients achieve their fitness goals, and I’m so honored to have her as part of our team. Read on to learn her strategies for finding balance and how barre3 helped her rediscover her healthiest self! Here’s Megan in her own words:
I fell in love with barre3 when my youngest son was four months old. We were traveling to Portland to visit family, and my sister-in-law Kait insisted that we all take the Christmas Eve class she was teaching. I was worried about having to wrap my post-partum body in spandex—in fact, I was dreading it!
No one was more shocked than me when I loved every second of class. For the first time since becoming a mom, I actually felt graceful and strong. I went to the studio every day while I was visiting Portland; I didn’t want Christmas vacation to end because I didn’t want to say goodbye to barre3! That’s when I started thinking about bringing barre3 to Fayetteville.
I signed up for 28 to Great as soon as I got home. Even if the house was a mess and I had no idea what we were having for dinner, I found at least 30 minutes for an online workout every day. It got easier and easier to make that time a priority because the workouts felt so good at every level.
Right now, I’m participating in the Spring Challenge. My intention is to resist an all-or-nothing mindset. It’s easy to go hard and then, if something derails you for a few days, throw in the towel because you weren’t perfect. I know this is a risk for me, and so right from the start, I make getting back on the horse if I fall off an explicit part of my challenge: I will persist, forgive myself, and remember to have fun.
For the first time ever in my adult life, I enjoy and look forward to exercising. Within three months of starting barre3, I lost all of my pregnancy weight. Between March and October, I went from size 31 jeans to size 25—the smallest I’ve ever been in my life. I never thought I’d have a body like this after two children!
Barre3 is the perfect intersection of ridiculously hard and ridiculously nice. I go to my edge in class and shake like crazy because I want to be a little braver and stronger than I was yesterday, not because I want to outdo the woman next to me. You aren’t competing—you’re building your best and happiest self.
I also love how genuine barre3 is. Everyone works hard and walks the walk: eating well, moving all day, loving family and friends wholeheartedly, striving for balance. (Something I work on every day!) For me, balance is about asking for help and reminding myself that life isn’t about being perfect—it’s about trying hard and being kind to myself and to others. Sometimes, there will be avocado on the walls after dinner. Sometimes, there are more important things to do than clean it up.
My favorite moments in the studio are clients’ “Aha!”s. I love helping people find the tiny adjustment or modification that gets them deep in a posture. I love hearing about baby steps towards whole body health: trying a new veggie, getting through a week with no diet soda, inviting a coworker to take a walk at lunch. The network of support in our studio means so much to me, personally, and watching others lifted up by it too is just the best!
Since I’ve joined the barre3 family, I’ve learned that becoming a mom doesn’t have to mean the end of feeling hot and healthy. I’ve also learned that it’s totally worth it to take big risks and make big changes. It isn’t easy—there are always curveballs—but when I go big, I learn that the hard parts are also the most rewarding ones. It’s a lesson that I’m excited to share with both my kids and my clients!
