Studio Owner Spotlight: Courtney Gerlach + Whitney Carpenter
We’re excited to announce the opening of barre3 Powell near Columbus, Ohio! Owner Courtney Gerlach opened barre3 Columbus last year, and she teamed up with her good friend Whitney Carpenter to take on a second studio in the area.
These two are the dream duo, and they inspire our barre3 team daily. We’re so proud of them and the vibrant community they’ve created in Columbus, Ohio. We recently sat down with them for an interview, and here’s what they had to say. Read on to learn more.
Courtney: For many years, working out was just physical. I loved to sweat and feel my muscles burning. Five years ago, I realized that exercise wasn’t just about physical health, it was about whole body health. I started searching for something I could do my whole life. I wanted something that would give me energy and balance my mindset.
Whitney: Courtney and I became fast friends working at Ohio State University. Courtney has always been the go-to girl for all things hip and cool. She turned me and a bunch of other girls on to barre3. After work, a group of us used to meet at her house, and we’d do Sadie Lincoln’s Total Body Lift DVD together.
Courtney: I always had a vision that I would have my own business. For a long time, I didn’t know what that meant or how that would come to fruition. Once I found barre3 on the internet, it was instant love. The brand resonated with me. I liked the philosophy, the website, I liked Sadie Lincoln. I liked everything that barre3 was doing. I thought, “Hey! I can recreate this in Ohio!” I opened the studio because I needed the workout as much as I wanted to share it with others.
Whitney: I’ve never been that girl who loves working out. I hated getting sweaty in high school. In college, I only exercised if it was social. Barre3 is the first exercise I’ve enjoyed doing. The music makes me want to dance, and it gives me amazing results that I wasn’t even looking for in the first place. For the longest time, my lower body was getting bulky from sitting at a desk all day. I’m leaner and toned now. My core is strong. My posture has improved. I’m so much more aware of my body. It wasn’t even intentional. It just accidentally happened.
Courtney: I’ve learned a lot about myself since I’ve started practicing barre3. I do have leadership skills. I never thought that I possessed those. It’s also okay to honor your truth level. I don’t have to beat myself up if my reality doesn’t match my expectations for my physical abilities that day.
Whitney: I’ve learned how much things can change in 60 minutes. Clients come in frazzled and stressed from their day, and they leave smiling and more relaxed. I’ve also learned that I can love what I do. I never thought I’d be that person who has a dream job…who loves going to work. Sometimes 12-hour days are the most rewarding and my favorite. It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.
