OUR FAVORITE WORKOUT SONGS OF ALL TIME, BROUGHT TO YOU BY OUR RESIDENT MUSIC GENIUS (PLAYLIST INCLUDED!)
You may recognize Andrew Ash as one of our amazing Corporate Master Trainers (or from his high-energy classes in Portland!), but did you know he’s also our music genius? He sorts, tests, and selects all of our tunes, including those you hear in-studio and during B3 Online workouts. It’s the ideal gig for Andrew, who writes songs and sings on the side, and spends most of his time, as he puts it, “listening to music, reading about music, or thinking about music.” We recently caught up with him to talk pop, singing in the shower, his secret album, and more. Read on to get to know our resident expert, and get his playlist of all-time favorite workout songs, created just for you.
MUSIC ON OR OFF: On, all day, every day. I get lost in music. There have been times I’ve sat on the couch looking out the window thinking about a song, and then an hour later I’m like, “WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!”
SONG THAT BEST DESCRIBES YOU: “Chocolate (Milk Version)” by Jesse Rose and Trozé. If you haven’t heard it yet, I highly suggest taking a listen.
CHILDHOOD DREAM: To be a pop star. I’ve always wanted to be in the music industry, and B3 has been a great outlet for that.
FAVORITE MUSIC GENRE: All things POP!
FIRST CONCERT: My first concert was N’Sync at the Washington County Fair, but I still tell everyone it was the Spice Girls, because that was my first stadium concert.
TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: One of the things I like most about working at B3 is that there is no typical day. Most days, I teach a class in the morning, research new music, mix playlists, and respond to a ton of emails.
WHY MUSIC MATTERS: B3 is so much more than just a workout—it’s an experience, and the music adds to that. Stretching at the end of class is great, but when you add a big, inspirational song on top of it, you leave feeling empowered and motivated. It’s almost like the score to a movie. What would “Star Wars” be without that big opening theme by John Williams? You’d have a really good movie, but it’s the score that makes it an outstanding experience.
MAKINGS OF A GREAT B3 SONG: There are a lot of checks on the criteria list, but most importantly, the song has to be innovative. I love that we get to introduce clients to music that normally wouldn’t be heard, or remixes that totally transform the sound of an original song. I think it’s so cool that we can act as trendsetters in music.
PICKING + CHOOSING: B3 instructors around the country are always sending me amazing new music. Right now, I’m sorting through about 150 songs a month from them, and then I have my own list of songs I go through—it’s in the thousands. We have guidelines to help us pick, but what I’m really looking for is the feeling of a song. Does this song move me? Does this song excite me? Does it stand out from the rest? Will clients like it? Will instructors want to use it? Those are the hard-hitting questions I ask myself.
MAKINGS OF A GREAT B3 PLAYLIST: Variety in genre makes a playlist magical. Every class at B3 should be a mixture of pop, R&B, and house music. Too much of the same sound is not a great thing. Not everyone loves pop, and not everyone loves R&B—but when you use the genres together, everyone is happy.
FAVORITE ALBUM: “Blackout” by the queen, Britney Spears. There are very few albums I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a single song, and this is one of them. It is pop GOLD!
SONG YOU GOTTA DANCE TO: If “Into You” by Ariana Grande comes on in the car, I’m the guy that people stare at because he’s dancing as if he needs an exorcism.
SHOWER SOLO: This is musical theater territory. “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables frequently visits my shower.
TUNES FOR TRAVEL: When I’m commuting or traveling, I’m either listening to the Top 40 on the radio or classical—it’s very soothing.
FUN FACT: I have an album on iTunes and Spotify titled “Grudges” that I recorded back in 2012. Check it out!
