My Takeaways From the 2016 Owner Summit (They’re Big!)
I just realized that my company is big. I know that sounds ridiculous coming from a CEO leading a 120+ studio business and a thriving online business. But in many ways my company feels small and intimate. I think this is because what we’re doing is so personal. When I stood up on our stage at the Owner Summit this past weekend, I realized in every cell of my body the importance of protecting the rich connection each of us has with each other.
I also realized how challenging business is becoming as we grow bigger. The good news? I love a good challenge and so does my team! We all know that the key to staying true to our north star is communication, so we vowed to communicate in a meaningful way with each other—and way more often than we do now. This world moves at a rapid pace, making it hard to remember the absolute necessity of picking up the phone versus shooting an email, planning time to see each other in person, and being present with a listening ear when we are together.
When someone franchises barre3, it’s to be a part of something bigger than themselves. There is great power in tapping into a community of like-minded peers who also own their own studios. There is also great purpose knowing you are a part of a movement that helps people connect health with true happiness. But even better than all this support for our owners is the power each of them holds to MAKE IT HAPPEN in their communities. We spent three days learning from the best how to run a successful and purpose-driven business, and we left with these game-changing takeaways:
Being a successful leader starts with self-awareness. We all took a test called the Kolbe Index, which is all about finding your strengths, and we had fun talking about ways to structure our lives so we can freely operate within our strengths versus trying to be something we are not. Each of us has a native genius, and this test celebrates that. We also learned how to prioritize time to self reflect, meditate, and fill our own tanks before giving generously to others.
Less is more. We learned how to set measurable goals based on our values and then how to make them a priority. When you try to do everything, it’s impossible to do anything well. If you focus on a very few top priorities, you can slay them and then move on to the next.
Being committed to real takes work. “Committed to real” is one of our core values at barre3, and while it is inherent to who we are, it’s also challenging. At Summit my owners and I talked about how tough it is to honor this commitment to real in a society that’s bombarded with unrealistic ideals tied to fitness, health, and beauty.
But…being real works! We took mind-blowing classes that proved that being real works! We learned that honoring your truth and plugging into heart-thumping, muscle-burning, mind-stretching barre3 classes is intoxicating and something we all must do. Because we do things differently. We do things in a way that empowers each of us as individuals—and that’s when results happen.
Get ready everyone. Your owners are more fired up than ever, and so am I. Are you ready for us?
