I FEEL LIKE I’VE HIT A PLATEAU. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
For every routine, there’s a plateau. The newness wears off, your excitement diminishes, and suddenly what used to be fun feels like a chore. That’s the bad news. The good news? We’ve designed the barre3 workout so that you never have to sit in a plateau for long.
Hit a plateau? Barre3 Lead Instructor Catie gives five ways to shake things up.
CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE
You love your 6am class – you’re an early riser, and it’s great to get a sweat in before work. But to see progress, you want to keep your body guessing, and adding variety to your schedule can help. Shake things up and get in a class during lunch or try going after work. Your body feels different throughout the day, and that alone will change your workout. What’s more, taking different classes often means experiencing a new instructor. All instructors have different ways of cueing postures that may resonate with you more and help unlock different things in your body.
TAKE NEW MODIFICATIONS AND TRY NEW PROPS
Maybe you’re committed to your 3-pound weights, or you never add a resistance band to your Sumo Squats. While we encourage you to honor what your body needs, we also love when you bring curiosity to your workout. Before class, we may challenge you to embrace a few modifications you’ve never tried or add a prop you’re hesitant to pick up. While we don’t expect all of these to work for everyone, you might discover something new that’ll take your workout to the next level.
GIVE OUR ONLINE WORKOUTS A TRY
If you’re a studio member, you might not realize that you have full access to barre3 online. And while heading to the studio is great, online classes might be exactly what your body and schedule need. If you’re home with a sick kiddo or don’t have enough time for a 60-minute class, it can be empowering to press play and make your workout happen right in your living room.
If you’re already doing online workouts, it can be fun to change where you practice within your home. Maybe you’ve built a regular routine of barre3 in your bedroom—switch it up and try going into the living room. Changing your space can even be as simple as lighting a candle and turning the lights off or just opening a window and letting in some fresh air.
ADD IN SOME RESTORATIVE WORKOUTS
We’ve been taught that the harder we push ourselves, the faster we’ll see results. But part of working toward a state of balance is leaning into the ease and effort of our movement. Magical things can happen when you embrace the softer sides of workouts or when you notice that your body needs to be recharged. Barre3 online includes calming workouts that allow you to tap into your body wisdom and offer a restorative complement to your more challenging workouts.
SET AN INTENTION
When you’ve stuck to a regular schedule for so long, it can start to feel like you’re just going through the motions. At barre3, we encourage you to bring mindfulness to your movement, and if you take a moment to set an intention before your workout, it can amplify the effort you’re putting in. That intention can be as simple as saying, “I’m going to focus on my breath,” or telling yourself that you’ll try a prop that might make you nervous. Setting an intention directs your focus and clarifies what you want to get out of your workout.
