I think everything’s more fun with a buddy, and working out is no exception. Lucky for me, I’ve got a handful of amazing girlfriends in Portland who feel the same way about exercise. Not only is it a great chance for us to socialize, we hold each other accountable, give each other encouragement, and celebrate each others’ successes. In other words, way more fun—way less slacking.
My friends are just as busy as I am, but even in the midst of our crazy schedules, we still find a way to make it work. Here’s how:
1) Once a week, we text each other to figure out our weekly plan. There are several friends in the group, so if not everyone can make it at the same time, we pair off as our schedules allow. Having my workouts planned before the week even begins really helps me manage my busy schedule.
2) Most days we work out at 6:00 am so we’re sure to get it in before the day gets hectic. We also carpool, which eliminates the temptation to press the snooze button too many times. By the time I’m in the car with my best friend Teal, I’m already thankful for the added pressure to get my rear out of bed!
3.) Teal (everyone needs a friend like her) is super athletic and competitive. She loves boot camp-style workouts and anything that pushes her limits. I’m drawn to more restorative, graceful workouts like yoga (and of course barre3!). I love the way we balance each other out—I help her slow down and get centered, while she helps me finish strong and break out of my comfort zone. It’s a match made in workout heaven.
If you haven’t established a circle of workout friends yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. And if your friends are reluctant to commit, ask around the barre3 studio. I guarantee you’ll find some like-minded clients within our community who would love to join your group. The more, the merrier!
