Genius holiday styling tips to get you from morning to midnight
We’re loving all the holiday-party “get the looks” out there, but there’s one problem: They all assume we have hours of free time to prep before each holiday gathering.
While we would love nothing more than a leisurely primp session, complete with fancy eye-shadow palettes and a closet full of options, our reality looks more like this: wake up at the crack of dawn, grab a quick coffee/walk the dog/drop the kids off at school, work all day, and rush straight from the office to that evening’s soirée. Sound familiar?
Until now, our solution—if you can call it that—has been to toss a little black dress into our bag on our way out the door in the morning and throw it on, wrinkles and all, before the party. But this year we wanted a strategy that was both more practical and more stylish, so we turned to Christine Tran and Colton Winger, the genius team behind the personal-styling agency Cuniform.
Using clothes we already had in our closets (no shopping required!) Christine and Colton showed three members of the B3 Home Office team how to take an outfit from morning errands to the office to evening festivities, with just a few key swaps in between. Cuniform’s tips and tricks are yours for the taking. Here’s to happy—and stylish!—holidays.
Morning: Jaclyn freely admits that she’s not a morning person, but she does like to catch up with friends over coffee when time allows. The Cuniform crew kept her early-morning look simple but stylish: a classic pencil skirt, a striped shirt—untucked to keep things casual—opaque black tights, black booties, and a cozy parka to keep the chill at bay.
Daytime: A few key tweaks give Jaclyn’s look a professional edge. Keeping the same “foundation” outfit, she tucked in her shirt—Cuniform recommended a “tight tuck” (no blousing) for a streamlined feel—threw on a black blazer, and ditched the tights.
Holiday Party: Losing the stripes and putting a creative spin on the blazer takes Jaclyn from day to night. The styling duo pinned her jacket closed to create a deep v-neck, swapped out her boots for nude heels, and added a graphic evening clutch.
Morning: Michelle starts every day by walking her beloved dog, Jeff—but as the Director of Corporate Communications for barre3, she needs to be ready to jump into a day of meetings immediately afterward. Cuniform gave her a look that’s comfortable and casual enough for a neighborhood stroll but also serves as a great base outfit to launch her into the rest of the day: Michelle’s favorite t-shirt, her trusty Chuck Taylors, and—the “statement” piece—her pleated leather skirt. Layer on a fun updated bomber, and she and Jeff are out the door!
Work: Cuniform kept Michelle’s transition to work easy and quick, simply swapping the bomber for a sweater that’s both stylish and cozy enough to keep her toasty warm on cold December days.
Holiday Party: Never underestimate the power of an animal print! By adding a leopard-print silk blouse—and doing a fun “criss-cross tuck” with it—the Cuniform team takes Michelle’s outfit from functional to festive. With such a spotlight-stealing shirt, the stylists kept Michelle’s shoe basic but party-appropriate, opting for a classic black bootie.
Morning: As the mom of two young boys, Beth’s mornings are all about school drop-offs, parent meet-ups, and the occasional classroom-volunteer day. She needs clothes that are comfortable and unfussy but that also serve as a good base for the rest of her day. Knowing that Beth would want some sparkle later in the evening, Cuniform put her in a beaded shell, but then dressed it down by layering a button-down and gray cardigan on top and anchoring the look with black jeans and Converse sneakers.
Work: By ditching the cardigan and putting the button-down under the sparkly shell, Cuniform took Beth from mom-world to professional zone. Such a savvy swap! Since her role as the editor of the b3 Magazine has her on-the-go, with days packed with everything from writer meetings to photo shoots, Beth stuck with her comfy Converse.
Holiday party: Beth’s evening look required nothing more than a change of shoes—from Converse to heels—and a swipe of lipstick. The Cuniform team considered going no button-down for the party but decided they loved the unexpected edge it added to the look.
