barre3 Studio Owner Spotlight: Lauren Truslow
If you’ve ever dreamed of doing your own thing, you’ll definitely relate to Lauren Truslow. Today she shares how her passion for independence led to her to barre3—and why her new career fits in perfectly with her family values. She also dishes on her favorite Fall recipe and discusses how barre3 has kept her going strong during a challenging pregnancy with twins. Read on and meet Lauren:
I’d been an instructor for years, teaching everything from yoga to Pilates to Body Pump. But it was always for other people—deep down I dreamed of having my own studio. I loved the barre concept, so I started doing some research. All the other franchises made it look like a one-woman show—no support, no husbands, no kids to be found.
Then I discovered barre3. I loved the fact that it was so family friendly, that they offered child care, and especially that Sadie and her husband Chris founded it together. I started doing the online workouts, then flew out to Portland to meet the team. It wasn’t long before I was planning on opening my studio. I’m so glad I decided to go for it—Columbia needed barre3, and I’m proud to be the one to bring it to our community.
Even though I’m a teacher, I feel like a student because I’ve learned so much from my barre3 clients. I was always the one to go the longest, the deepest, the hardest—if I wasn’t, I thought I was wasting my time. Seeing my clients embrace modifications and really listen to their bodies has caused me to reevaluate my own practice. I no longer feel like I have to constantly push myself to the edge in order to be successful.
I’m really rocking the modifications these days, because I’m expecting twin girls this month! Barre3 has been a huge part of my prenatal plan—I still get a great workout and it’s so good for my physical and mental well-being. I wish I’d had barre3 in my life when I was pregnant with my first daughter Peyton; back then I didn’t know how to listen to my body and I was doing all sorts of scary stuff like trying to hold a plank pose when I was nine months along. I’m much wiser about my core workouts now.
I’m wiser about food too. In the gym world that I came from, there are so many protein shakes and supplements and energy bars that are filled with synthetic ingredients. I’ve realized that I feel so much better and lighter when I put real, whole foods in my body. I love making the barre3 granola; it’s my go-to breakfast. I like to make extra and put it in mason jars to give to friends.
Now that Fall is here, I’ll be making more barre3 soups and stews. Football is a huge deal here in South Carolina, so when we tailgate I’ll bring a crockpot filled with barre3 Butternut Squash soup—it’s always a hit. Of course, this year I’ll have my hands full with two newborns, so I’ll be watching the games from home. Our barre3 in the Park happened on September 19th and we had a huge showing. My goal was to try to hold off going into labor before then, because I really wanted to be there!
This month will mark the one-year anniversary of my studio opening. The experience has taught me that it’s possible to create an environment for yourself that’s all about support and strength and friendship. You just don’t find that in a corporate setting—at least, I hadn’t. Every day I literally go to work and think, “This is the best job in the whole world”.
