Black History Month
CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
This month, we are honoring Black voices in the barre3 community. Follow along on the barre3 Magazine and Instagram throughout February to hear from our members. Read on as Rachel Hagan of barre3 West Village shares her story.
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: What is your role at barre3?
RACHEL: Studio Director of barre3 West Village
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: How long have you been with barre3?
RACHEL: Since July 2021
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: What ethnicity do you identify with?
RACHEL: Black
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: What makes you proud of your ethnicity?
RACHEL: Black people are resilient in a remarkable way! In the midst of images of police violence, and instances of discrimination or microaggressions, we innovate, create, and find joy— every time! The stamp of Black culture all over American culture is undeniable, and I love that!
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: What is your favorite part about being a member of the barre3 community?
RACHEL: I love seeing our team thrive and find purpose in bringing a positive relationship to fitness to our clients. It’s really special to witness those positive connections being made and be a part of cultivating them!
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: Do you have a favorite barre3 memory?
RACHEL: Every time a client shares an experience about how our team has made a positive impact on their lives is really special. Every barre3 instructor puts so much heart and thought into building classes that build clients up, challenge them, and encourage them! I’m slightly biased (okay, a lot biased), but our team is so, so special and seeing them succeed at something that’s so fulfilling for them and others is the BEST!
BARRE3 MAGAZINE: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
RACHEL: My hope this year for Black History Month and beyond is that Black communities will find ease, rest, joy, and connection! And that those outside of our community will continue to educate themselves about the nuances of Black American experiences. For those of us who hold any form of privilege, considering how we spend our dollar and how we spend our privilege can reverberate to communities beyond our own in a big way. Happy February, y’all!
