We chatted with barre3 Director of Research and Development to get the lowdown on workout diversification. Read on to learn the why and the how behind workout diversification, and scroll to the bottom for a list of all the diversified workout options within barre3 online.
B3 Mag: What do we mean when we talk about diversifying your workout?
LISA: Diversifying your workout is all about exploring new ways to move your body. This could include any of the following; how fast or slow you are moving, if you are using props or not, trying a new modification, trying a new posture or even trying something completely new.
B3 Mag: Why is it important to diversify your workout?
LISA: Your body is super smart. When you first try something, like a squat series, your body is learning something new. This creates new mind/body connections and requires the muscles to break down (in a good way) and rebuild. This is how your body becomes stronger and more resilient. However, your body is smart so that once it learns something new, it no longer needs to work as hard.
B3 Mag: How often should you switch up your usual routine?
LISA: Routine is not a negative thing. Commiting to a practice helps you create a sustainable and holistic approach to movement and exercise. We all have days where our bodies are feeling ready to push. On these days, this is an opportunity to explore and see how you can push yourself in a new way. Pick up a prop you’ve never tried before, maybe try the modification option that makes the move a bit more challenging for your body, see if you can stay in the burn for a few more seconds, or try closing your eyes in a balance challenge. These actions are all amazing ways to teach your body something new and continue to build strength and endurance. It’s also important to know that there are days where your body isn’t feeling 100%. These are also days where you should listen in and lean into what your body needs. Maybe slow down your movements, take a modification that allows your body more space to move with ease, pair a shorter barre3 class with an outdoor walk, or press play on a foam-rolling video to help reset your body.
B3 Mag: How do you know which additional workouts you should bring into your routine?
LISA: It is healthy and fun to try new workouts. We’re featuring a few different Guest Instructors who teach HIIT and yoga in our January Challenge so you could play and explore new ways to move. However, always keep these three things in mind when working out:
- Does this workout bring you joy? Maybe running is your workout that helps you blow off steam. Or you love to sweat with fun dance cardio. Movement should be joyful, even when it challenges you physically. Check in with yourself before, during, and afterward to make sure the workout doesn’t feel like a chore.
- Negative pain is not OK. It’s normal for anything new to make you sore in your muscles or to physically challenge you. But if you wake up feeling sore in your joints or in chronically tense areas, this might not be the exercise for you.
- Barre3 will always support you. Our full-body balanced workout is designed with diversified, ever-evolving movements that deliver fantastic cross-training. No matter what else you do, barre3 is your homebase to strengthen and balance your body and center your mind.
