Reframe And Refresh With Our December Playlist
Anyone else looking for a refresh?
Maybe it’s the few hours of sunlight, chilly temps, or simply because we’re coming to the end of a challenging and unpredictable year, but we’ve been feeling the need for a little energy boost. And while we could listen to our favorite holiday songs all December long, we need to change it up every once in a while—and this month’s playlist does just the trick.
In our December playlist, barre3 Producer, Instructor, and resident DJ, Andrew Ash is bringing you a mix of songs that’ll set you up to finish the year strong. Jam out to Lady Gaga’s latest bop and listen to an empowering Beyoncé collaboration. And if you’ve been doing barre3 from the beginning, listen closely for a remix that’ll sound familiar. (Hint: it’s been a favorite on our barre3 studio playlists for years!).
Listen to the playlist on Spotify here and read on to learn why Andrew selected the artists for this month’s mix!
Michael Brun – Spice (ft. Kah-Lo)
New York-based Hatian DJ and producer, Michael Brun is known for his unique musical style that mixes electronic music with traditional Haitian music. In addition to creating amazing tracks like “Spice,” in 2014, Brun started his own record label “Kid Coconut” to showcase Hatian artists and music.
Kah-Lo is a Nigerian singer/songwriter who’s worked with powerhouse DJs and producers like The Knocks, Diplo, and Riton. In 2016 she was nominated for the Best Dance Recording at the 59th Grammy Awards for the song “Rinse & Repeat.” It may not be a song you’re familiar with if you live in the United States, but it was a massive hit in the UK, and named one of the Top 10 most played songs on BBC Radio 1.

Lady Gaga – Sour Candy (with BLACKPINK)
If you’re a fan of pop music and you haven’t yet heard Lady Gaga’s most recent album “Chromatica” you’re missing out. One of the many standout tracks from the album is “Sour Candy” featuring South Korean girl group sensation, BLACKPINK. The K-pop foursome is the highest charting Korean Female act on the Billboard Hot 100. Their single “Ice Cream” featuring Selena Gomez, peaked at #13, while their 2020 album “The Album” peaked at #2. We recommend turning the volume WAY UP on this moody, deep house, electropop bop.

Mapei – Don’t Wait – Benny Blanco Remix
If you’ve been with barre3 since day one, “Don’t Wait” by Mapei might sound familiar to you. The song was a staple of most barre3 studio playlists, and the Benny Blanco remix breathes new life into this nostalgic hit. Mapei is a Rhode Island-born, Swedish-American singer/songwriter, who began her music career as a rapper and became a minor YouTube sensation back in 2008 with her song “Video Vixens.” Since then, she’s released two albums “Hey Hey” and “Sensory Overload” and worked with well-known artists like Chance the Rapper and Sky Ferreira.

Aluna – Body Pump
There’s a chance you’ve heard of Aluna before. She’s the singer of London’s electronic music duo AlunaGeorge, who released hits like “You Know You Like It” and “Best Be Believing.” Now, Aluna is exploring a new signature sound on her own, and her 2020 debut album “Renaissance” is described as “the culmination of her journey from black girl in an all-white British suburb back in the day to launching a rule-breaking revolution where rigid boundaries dissolve between culture, race, gender, and genre.”

Nija, Beyoncé, Busiswa, Yemi Alade, Tierra Whack, Moonchild Sanelly, DJ Lag – MY POWER
There is no denying that “MY POWER” is the standout track from “The Lion King: The Gift.” Though most might be quick to label this track as a Beyoncé song, it’s the combination of Beyoncé, Ninja, Yemi Alade, Tierra Whack, and South African artists Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly, and DJ Lag that make this song so empowering. It’d be a musical crime not to recognize them all for their contribution to this incredible track, so take a minute to check out their Instagrams below and give them each a follow. If you’re looking for a song to get you fired up, look no further than the hip hop, afrobeat amazingness of ‘MY POWER’
