Your barre3 Quarantine Routine: Tips From a Studio Instructor
Today, Leighanne Houston, a barre3 instructor, is sharing ideas for bringing your barre3 practice home.
As an instructor at barre3 Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia, I am definitely missing our time together in the studio during this quarantine. Barre3 has become my happy place, and it remains my source of peace and happiness during these unprecedented times. Maybe it’s been that for you, too?
Many of us may be feeling a little out of control and out of balance lately. Maybe you’re struggling to homeschool your kiddos, keep your groceries stocked, maintain your sanity…. Maybe you haven’t washed your hair in a week. We’re all in this together!
Although we’ve been thrown for a loop, we can still rely on barre3 to keep us present and moving. Here are five ways to embrace your barre3 quarantine routine:
Set Up Your Space
Depending on your living situation, this will be different for everybody, but you don’t need a whole room dedicated to at-home workouts. If you have space for a mat and your body, you have enough room to do barre3! If you want to create a more specialized space, consider setting your mat up close to natural light, lighting a great-smelling candle or maybe even adding a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door.
Schedule Your Classes
Take some time at the beginning of each week to select the days you plan on moving with barre3, and put them in your calendar. Schedule this time for yourself like you would schedule an appointment. If you miss one or two workouts, give yourself grace—after all, life is crazy right now.
Change it Up
One upside of our schedules being completely upended is that we have the opportunity to change up our routines. If you used to rush to an evening class after work but have been working from home during this time, try a lunch-time class. Maybe you’re an early riser who always hits the 6 a.m. class. Try experimenting with a 10-minute mindful workout when you wake up, and a full workout later in the morning. Another fun way to switch it up? Try a different instructor, whether on barre3 online or through your local studio. Many times when we work out in the studio, the instructors we get to know and love are determined by the class times we’re available for. With livestream schedules varying each week and a range of instructors available anytime on barre3 online, this is a great time to take class with someone new. I have personally loved taking class with different instructors across the country!
Incorporate Your Loved Ones
Whether you’re social distancing at your childhood home with your parents, quarantining with your partner, or you’ve got the kids home from school, ask your housemates if they’d like to join you for your barre3 workout. It’s a great way to spend time together that doesn’t involve Netflix binging (guilty!). You can even invite friends or relatives who live in a different state to join in on a livestream class taught by your local studio. I invited my two best friends from Florida to join a class with me, and it was such a fun way to connect with them.
Allocate Rest Days
To wrap it up, right now is a strange time for us all. If you’re putting pressure on yourself to do it all, I feel you. The best thing we can do is to give ourselves grace and be gentle. We’re all doing the best we can. Schedule rest days each week to allow your body and mind to reset, recuperate, and restore. I love taking Sundays as a rest day and going for a long walk while listening to a podcast. Taking a break allows you to come back even stronger for your next barre3 workout and to show up as the best version of yourself each day.
