How barre3 Energizes Rather Than Depletes You
“I feel so energized after class!”
This is probably the most common remark we hear from our clients, whether they do the barre3 workout in-studio or online. What is it about barre3 that boosts our energy rather than depletes it? We sat down with Lisa Schale-Drake, VP of Research and Development, to get the science behind that post-class, ready-to-take-on-the-world feeling that’s so specific to barre3. As she explained, it comes down to six simple details of our workout:
We don’t skimp on warm-up and cool-down
These components are often neglected in fitness, but they’re key to a safe workout. “Waking your body up before going into resistance-based moves and helping your body wind down afterward are essential, explains Lisa. “Otherwise, your body gets pushed so hard that it can’t function normally,” she says. At barre3, we challenge you, but only when your body is ready, and we help you restore afterward. This is key to supporting your energy not just during the workout, but after, as well.
Barre3 moves are designed to produce energy in your body
Our workout consists of moves that elevate your heart rate, boost circulation, and help foster production of serotonin and endorphins. “At the same time,” explains Lisa, “we’re reminding you to be present in your body throughout the workout.” This way, you’re not simply shutting down and pushing yourself to an extreme, which can lead to overexertion and depletion.
We encourage you to take breaks
That whole no-pain-no-gain thing? So not our thing. At barre3, we believe that you know your body best, and that’s why we remind you throughout the workout to listen to your body and modify moves or take breaks anytime you need to. When you’re tapped into how your body feels, you’re more likely to give it the workout it needs—and that includes giving it the rest it needs.
We incorporate reset moments into our workouts
If you’ve done barre3, you know that there’s variation built into every workout. “Sometimes this means following a move with another move that counters it, and sometimes it means following an intense move with a more restorative one, like stretching,” says Lisa. This cadence is designed to balance the body, but also to reset your energy throughout class.
We finish the workout with guided breathwork
Any workout that includes cardio bursts is going to produce frenetic energy. That’s not a bad thing, but if you don’t bring your body back to calm state afterward, it can leave you feeling depleted. “Every barre3 workout wraps with guided breathwork, which sends fresh oxygen to your body, increases blood flow, and reduces your heart rate,” Lisa explains. You finish feeling calmer, less stressed—both physically and mentally—and energized.
