HOW MODIFYING IN BARRE3 LED ME TO MY LIFE CALLING
A big part of any barre3 class is feeling empowered to take modifications. Modifications help us trust and listen to our bodies, and they encourage us to make micro-changes that lead to big results. Whether it’s sinking another inch in Power Leg or choosing Sumo at the barre instead of doing Narrow Athletic V, listening to the inner voice encouraging a modification strengthens our connection to both our body and our mind. If you trust what your body and intuition are telling you, you will deepen your practice, build lasting endurance, and make the class uniquely perfect for you.
I’ve been applying the mindset of modifications outside of the studio by making small changes to feel more aligned, balanced, and purpose in my life. The results have been astounding. By going with my gut and making adaptations toward things that help me find ease in the effort (versus feeling like friction), I recently started accomplishing personal goals—and discovered a new calling in the process. These changes inspired a new mantra for how I live my life: Consistently making small modifications toward flow will transform your life for the better.
To find your flow in life, simply tune into that same intuitive voice that tells you to go deeper or make an adjustment in class. The theory is simple, but the execution can be hard, because sometimes your flow will take you outside of your comfort zone. But I promise, if you trust this process like you do in class, you will feel free and empowered, and you’ll quickly reach your goals.
Here are some of the changes I’ve made in my life over the past five years that have compounded into reaching goals and discovering two of my life’s callings:
Change 1:
I worked for myself as a successful marketing consultant, but I wasn’t satisfying that burning desire to help others, so I pulled the trigger on life-coach training in tandem with my day job.
Marketing felt like friction, and I was on the lookout for something new. I found life coaching and felt right at home. I kept my marketing clients for the income, but I made more room for coaching because I knew it would stick with me forever.
Change 2:
I worked for startups, thinking I could coach teams and make a big impact internally. The physical inactivity was taking a toll on me, so I became a barre3 instructor on the side, which made me feel so much better.
I was trying to incorporate coaching in the corporate world, but it wasn’t being receptive. In the meantime, I found a new creative outlet through barre3. This is part of the hero’s journey, where you have to continue to try new things until you find your groove!
Change 3:
I wasn’t making the organizational impact I desired as a marketing employee, so I changed my career path and became an office manager for another startup.
Did this move make a lot of sense in terms of expected career growth? No. But I knew that I wanted to manage employee experience and the office environment, and that’s exactly what I was able to do in this role. I quickly became the go-to person in the organization sand glue that kept things afloat. This role made me feel like I was getting closer to my calling, although the stress of startups made me burn out.
Change 4:
With the foundation of coaching and barre3, I decided to retire from the corporate world completely to open my own barre3 studio and continue coaching.
I knew how I wanted to feel in my life, and both coaching and barre3 make me feel at home. Leaving corporate was a huge leap of faith, but I’ve never been more excited than I am to start this new chapter as an owner with a community of people I admire and love so much. It was a journey to get here, but each step and micro-change led me to the next, which led me here.
In class and in life, small changes add up to long-lasting results. Remember that you always have a choice. You can stay where you are (and sometimes that feels really good!), or you can sink a little deeper and pour out more effort to experience your best workout and life.
