WHY—AND HOW—THE BARRE3 WORKOUT IS ALWAYS EVOLVING
Throughout your barre3 practice, you’ll notice evolutions in our workout. Sometimes the changes are nearly imperceptible—slight variations in a move, for example, or more emphasis on breathwork. Other times, the changes are much bigger—like the new core work we instituted a couple of years ago.
What’s behind the changes, big and small? Science.
“The science behind the body and exercise is constantly evolving,” explains Lisa Schale-Drake, barre3 VP of Research and Development. “Our job is to stay abreast of the latest research, evaluate whether the findings make sense for the barre3 approach and philosophy, and then, when appropriate, incorporate these learnings into our workout.”
To do this, Lisa and her team work with a board of experts, which includes everything from physical therapists and sports chiropractors to experts in breathwork and meditation. They also work closely with a research expert, who helps Lisa and her team comb through the vast amount of research on body mechanics and exercise to find the best, most reputable studies. “We take what we learn from robust studies vetted by our research expert, and we bring it to working sessions with our body and mind experts,” explains Lisa.
“And we look at every evolution through the lens of the barre3 mission. Does this shift help us better deliver on our mission to teach people to be balanced in body and empowered from within? If the answer is yes, we figure out the best way to bring it into the mix.”
Staying up on the latest research also means occasionally retiring moves from the workout. “Core work is a perfect example of this,” explains Lisa. “For years the research supported the notion that traditional crunches were great for the core. But a few years ago, scientists discovered that crunches can also cause or exacerbate lower-back pain. When we learned that, we worked around the clock to revamp our barre3 core work to make sure we were giving our clients the best, safest workout.” The shift meant retraining our entire fleet of instructors and removing any online workouts that included the outdated core work. “Ultimately our clients are better off for it, and they’re our top priority.”
With our new online platform, you’ll find our safest, most effective workouts. And this is just the beginning.
“We’ve ramped up our filming schedule so we can bring our clients even more workouts,” says Lisa. Watch for new collections, cardio-focused sessions, mindful flows, and so much more. And let us know what you think! “Part of the ongoing evolution of the barre3 workout is making sure our community is getting exactly what it needs,” says Lisa. “We rely on feedback to help us know what’s resonating and what’s not. We’re in this together!”
