Joy, fulfillment, pride. Guilt, shame, uncertainty. Motherhood is a complex, nuanced mix of a vast range of emotions, and yet somehow, it can feel uncomfortable—unacceptable, even—to express anything that so much as veers toward the negative end of the spectrum.
This month, we’re celebrating motherhood for everything it is—the joys, challenges, and all the messy, surprising, incredible moments in between—with our Let’s Talk Motherhood series. Over the next four weeks, four members of the barre3 community will share their experience of motherhood with us, answering questions that skip the small talk and get right to the issues.
Today, we’re excited to share Mona Jane’s perspective on motherhood. Self-described as a mother, wife, fitness addict, nature obsessor, and adventure-seeking adrenaline junkie, Mona Jane is constantly on the move—which is why barre3 Online is the perfect fit for her.
I’m the mama of…
A super-active little boy!
Before I became a mother, I thought motherhood was…
All I wanted in life. I thought that it was definitely hard, but more rewarding than anything else in life.
My favorite part of being a mom is…
Watching my son’s character come to life in so many different ways, and watching him grow, learn, achieve new things, and love the same things we do. I also love the constant reminder of what life should be—full of love, fun, adventure, laughter, tears, learning, and growing!
The hardest thing about being a mom is….
That plans never really ever go according to plan, haha. Oh and that you have to be the nice guy, bad guy, and cool guy all at the same time. Figuring out the best way to discipline your children in a positive way can get tricky, because there is something new to deal with every day.
The thing I miss most about my life before motherhood is…
The independence…being able to do things when I wanted to do it with no distractions.
My philosophy on motherhood is…
Life begins when you step outside of your comfort zone. Live freely; kids are no reason to stop doing the things you love. Let them add extra love to the experience.
When I can carve out time for myself, I…
Surf or break a sweat!
Motherhood has changed my feelings about…
Pretty much everything! My divine purpose in life, my potential, my health, what life is all about, and what unconditional love really is!
I would tell mothers-to-be…
Think of what will matter to you in 20 years time when your kids are grown and gone. Forget the to-do lists, focus on the here and now. Allow spontaneity and remember that time flies way too fast!
I hope my kids remember me as…
Their number-one fan and supporter!
