WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE BARRE3 WARM-UP? WE BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU.
We all know the barre3 warm-up feels amazing, but did you know it also does amazing things for your body? From those first opening breaths to the heart-pumping large-range moves, every aspect of our warm-up is there for a reason. We talked to Director of Corporate Instructor Development Meredith Leback to learn why those first few minutes of class are so crucial.
Read on to get the scoop on how the barre3 warm-up optimizes your workout.
IT HELPS YOU RESET YOUR BODY PRE-WORKOUT
Though the sequencing and moves might differ from class to class, all barre3 warm-ups have a few things in common. “We always start with Primary Posture. This powerful posture allows clients to fully arrive in their body, connect to their breath, and put their bodies in optimal alignment,” says Meredith. From there, we move in a large range of motion that allows the body to heat in the safest, most efficient way, slowly letting the heart rate rise. Every warm-up includes all the ranges of spinal mobility— flexion, extension, lateral movement, and rotation, active hamstring, hip flexor and inner hip stretches, and plank.”
IT PREPS YOUR BODY FOR WHAT’S TO COME
All those squats and lunges prepare your heart and lungs for what’s to come, and they get your entire body ready to move. “Our warm-up is specifically designed to hit every plane of motion,” says Meredith. “It heats every joint and muscle that will be worked in the rest of the 60-minute class.”
IT HELPS PREVENT INJURY
Many of us come into class from work or home—two places where we’re not likely to be very active. Going directly from a sedentary state to a high-energy workout without a good warm-up doesn’t give your muscles the chance to heat properly. This puts you at risk for everything from muscle tear to strain. The barre3 warm-up increases blood flow to your muscles, which heats and oxygenates them. This prepares them for the rest of the workout.
IT TEACHES YOU TO SLOW DOWN AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
“A lot of warm-ups out there encourage clients to go too hard too fast, implying that is how to get the most out of each workout,” says Meredith. “We want clients to use the time in warm-up to check in with their bodies, check in with their minds, and figure out what their needs are for the class.” In other words, our warm-up sets the stage for the rest of the barre3 class, where we encourage you throughout to look within to understand what your body needs at that moment.
