REAL-LIFE ADVICE ABOUT HOW TO GO FOR WHAT YOU WANT
“Follow Your Dreams.” “Take the Leap.” “Never Give Up.”
Quotes about going for your dreams are nice and all, but all the inspiration in the world isn’t going to make your dream happen. At a certain point, going for what you really want comes down to you.
That’s why we love the way Jules Hunt, of Om & The City, approaches the topic. Essentially, she gives a firm but gentle nudge:
“STOP PROCRASTINATING AND DO THE WORK.”
Refreshing, isn’t it?
We talked to Jules about how she followed her own dream, the number-one thing that keeps people from following their dreams, and her concrete tips for making yours happen.
B3 MAGAZINE: We love your approach to getting people to go for their dreams—it’s just firm enough without feeling aggressive or intimidating. Can you talk a bit about why you feeling strongly about this topic?
JULES: I spent several years working really hard at different jobs where the culture was far from empowering. I quickly found myself feeling unfulfilled, so that’s when I realized I needed to shift my focus, change my career, and ultimately, change my life. We spend more time at work with colleagues than we do with our own loved ones, so you absolutely have to feel good about your work and the people around you. If you don’t, you’ll come home feeling miserable (or crying like I used to), and there’s no way those emotions won’t seep into your personal life. How could they not? I believe everyone can find that balance and love their job if they are open to it. It’s important to let go of any expectations you or anyone else had for yourself, and just listen to your gut.
B3 MAGAZINE: Does your stance on this topic stem from personal experience? In other words, did you have a time when you were putting off pursuing your dreams and then decided to go for it?
JULES: I never thought my blog would turn into a full-time job. It was a far and distant dream, but I didn’t start writing for those reasons. I think when you truly find your groove and you’re happy, you radiate that energy and the universe talks back and gives you want you want. So, I do very strongly believe that if you’re living your truth, everything else will align. We live in a funny age where absolutely anything can be turned into a full-time job. Think of the comedians who started on Vine pranking their moms. They are now huge and making a living off of just being hilarious. #Goals
B3 MAGAZINE: What have you found is the number-one thing that keeps people from pursuing their dreams?
JULES: Fear. And I totally understand that fear. It is completely crippling, but you have to realize if you truly want something, you won’t let yourself fail. You’ll always figure it out. On New Year’s Eve, I pulled a word out of a hat that was supposed to represent my life’s theme for 2017. That word was ‘TRUST’—so, I quit my job the first week back from winter break and continued to pour trust into every decision I’ve made since then. We are now halfway through the year and I’ve already doubled my business, so I know I made the right decision.
B3 MAGAZINE: Even when someone finally decides to go for a dream, the path is rarely 100% smooth. What’s your advice for how to persevere when you hit bumps in the road?
JULES: Analyze the bump. What went wrong? How can you do better? What did you learn from this? How can you help others not to make the same mistake? No journey is perfect, but just continue to fail forward until you finally feel like you’ve hit your sweet spot. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either—more people are willing to give you advice and guidance than you may realize!
B3 MAGAZINE: Sometimes the simple “go for your dreams” is too vague to really have any effect. Can you offer some concrete tips for achieving your dreams?
JULES: My top 5 tips: 1. Find your focus; 2. Learn as much as you can about it; 3. Find your OWN voice and create your own path—don’t imitate someone else’s; 4. Be consistent; 5. Trust in your strengths, and strengthen your weaknesses.
