8 TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST BARRE3 CLASS
Stepping into a barre3 studio for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience. What should I bring? Will I know what to do? What’s this squishy orange ball for?
It’s completely normal to have questions! And while we make sure each and every person who walks into the studio feels warmly welcomed and fully taken care of, we also know what it feels like to be the newbie in any situation. So to help quell any initial nervousness, here are a few common do’s and don’ts to guide you through your first barre3 class confidently. (Psst—if you’re a studio regular, pass this along to that friend who’s been thinking of trying a class but hasn’t taken the leap yet!)
Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your first class:
- DO bring a water bottle. That’s all! You don’t need to worry about bringing grip socks (unless you’d prefer them) or any other props for that matter. All the mats, weights, balls, and bands are on us.
- DO come as you are. At barre3, we celebrate diversity, and every individual who walks through our doors is a part of that special sauce. There is no “uniform” or “acceptable attire.” Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move freely.
- DO connect with your instructor. Try to arrive to your first class 10-15 minutes before class so your instructor can get you set up, answer questions, and go over any concerns you may have. Dealing with any aches or pains? Let your instructor know ahead of time, and you’ll be in good shape.
- DO make it yours. As much as barre3 is a group workout, the experience is all about you. Honor your body and its limitations. If something doesn’t feel good, don’t force it. If you want to challenge yourself, take the turbo option. Our adaptive teaching method means everyone gets a stellar workout, not matter what the fitness level.
- DO get ready to shake. Barre3 is a full-body workout, so don’t be surprised to engage with muscles you haven’t felt before. You may even experience “shakes and quakes” as we lovingly call them, a sign that your muscles are becoming stronger.
- DON’T compare yourself to others. You don’t have to work the same postures exactly the same way as your neighbor, and instructors offer adaptations throughout class so you can go deep in a way that feels good.
- DON’T give up. It often takes two or three classes to get the hang of things and to know what to expect. Stay positive and leave the expectations of instant perfection at the door.
- DON’T overthink it. Just do. You got this.
