Boost Your Immunity with these simple strategies
With cold and flu season in full swing, now is the time to focus on your day-to-day wellness. Here are our favorite ways to boost immunity, stay energized, and fuel your body with nutritious meals.
DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH. While we often gulp down drinks without too much thought, this is a great time to set some intentions for your sips. Reach for Sadie’s Flu Fighting Elixir when you’re feeling under the weather—or when you want to stay healthy when a loved one is sick. Or try a sparkling glass of kombucha to give your body a dose of beneficial probiotics. You can also enjoy a mug of Golden Milk to help fight inflammation. And, as always, fill up on plenty of water each day. During the chilly months we love to drink it warm with a squeeze of lemon.
PACK IN THE PRODUCE. No matter which supplements you take (or don’t take), the best way to protect yourself from illness is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables each day. Add greens to your morning smoothie, incorporate plenty of produce into your snacks, and build your main meals around plants, with meat and dairy as flavorful garnishes.
FOCUS ON VITAMIN C. It seems almost too good to be true that so many delicious varieties of citrus are in season in the winter, right when our bodies need that burst of Vitamin C the most. Look for new varieties of oranges, grapefruit, clementines, mandarin oranges, and kumquats to keep things interesting. And try adding whole citrus to a smoothie and finishing Chicken Tacos or Sweet Potato Curry with a squeeze of lime juice to add flavor and nutrients.
TRY SOMETHING NEW. Here’s a simple trick to avoid getting stuck in a food rut: Buy two items of produce each week that you didn’t buy the week before. It’s a simple goal, but one that can go a long way toward helping you stay enthusiastic about preparing healthful meals. If you have kids, bring them along to the grocery store. They’ll have fun helping you choose new fruits and veggies, and they’ll be more likely to eat them come dinnertime!
TAKE TIME FOR TEA. With a calmer stream of energy than coffee, tea is our drink of choice to ease into the day and for settling down at night. Reach for a new flavor, visit that local tea shop you keep walking by, and take a few moments to sit, sip, and breathe.
