Have you been hearing all the buzz about hygge, the Danish concept that embraces all things cozy and convivial? We are, like much of the country, obsessed—not just because we love everything about it, but also because it aligns so perfectly with much of what B3 is about.
In honor of the lifestyle trend, we’re offering a few of our favorite ways to hygge, B3 style. But first: What, exactly, is hygge? There’s no direct English translation for the word, but this definition is the best we’ve found so far:
Hygge [heu-gah] – The art of building sanctuary and community, of inviting closeness and paying attention to what makes us feel open hearted and alive. To create well-being, connection and warmth. A feeling of belonging to the moment and to each other. Celebrating the every day.
It’s all about being present, giving generously, connecting with your community, and fueling your soul with simple, good things—in other words, all the things we celebrate here at B3.
Ready to give it a shot? Here are a few simple ways to bring hygge into your home:
CREATE A COZY SPACE. If you’re not comfortable, you can’t hygge. So ditch anything that feels stuffy or forced (this is the perfect excuse to get rid of that uncomfortable chair you’ve disliked for years!), grab your snuggliest blankets, light some candles, and build a crackling fire.
COOK SOMETHING SIMPLE AND NOURISHING. Stress and perfection are the enemies of hygge, so don’t put pressure on yourself to prepare the perfect meal. Soups that you can prepare ahead of time work great (this one and this one are our current winter favorites). And it doesn’t have to be a meal at all—snacks are casual and communal, making them the perfect hygge food. Whip up something simple like our Curried Cashews or Roasted Chickpeas.
MAKE YOUR FAVORITE WARM DRINK. There’s nothing more hygge than warming your hands on a steaming mug of something delicious. Our Hot Cinnamon Apple Cider is a great option, as is our Pumpkin Chai Latte.
PUT ON SOMETHING COMFY. Cozy socks, your favorite chunky cardigan, your comfiest boyfriend jeans. If it’s the sartorial version of a hug, it’s hygge.
INVITE A FEW FRIENDS OVER. This is the most important piece of the puzzle—after all, the coziest house in the world can still feel cold when it’s not filled with loved ones. Remember that the point of hygge is all about connecting with—not impressing—loved ones. Don’t plan a party, and don’t spend hours making your house look perfect. Simply create an inviting environment, greet your guests with a warm, genuine smile, and let the hygge begin.
