Stress-Free Holiday Travel? Yes! Here’s How.
Are you traveling this holiday season? We’ve got your back! We reached out to some of our favorite travel-savvy bloggers (and our favorite Editor in Chief!) and asked them to share their favorite tips and tricks. Whether you’re hopping on an airplane or hitting the open road, you’ll love having their expert tips at the ready!
Prepare, prepare, prepare
Before I leave, I research food options, so even if we’re wandering or on the road, I can count on one wholesome meal. Maybe it’s a trusty Whole Foods, or something new to try. I function best during the day with at least one big salad in me, so I make it my responsibility to find one. – Sara Forte, Sprouted Kitchen
Learn to travel carry-on only. Plan, use an assortment of mesh packing cubes (I love mine from Eagle Creek), and do some serious editing. Pack clothes that easily mix and match, brainstorm outfits, and create your own sorting system. Going carry-on will force you to be more organized and to pack clothes you’ll actually wear, and you’ll never risk lost luggage again. – Shannon Kircher, The Wanderlust Effect
I always pack my own healthy meal for the plane: something with vegetables and protein, that’s easily portable. Maybe a salad with hard boiled eggs, or roasted vegetables and quinoa and feta. Even if it’s a short flight, between getting to the airport and waiting, I get hungry. – Sara Forte, Sprouted Kitchen
Own your in-transit experience
My least favorite things about flying are that it’s stressful, it’s cold, and it’s smelly—so I developed a travel hack that conquers all three! Before I leave, I make sure I load a guided-meditation podcast on my phone or iPad, and I spritz a cozy, oversized scarf with lavender essential oils. I pack an insulated mug and carry a few bags of my favorite tea (I’m a fan of Steven Smith’s Meadow Herbal Infusion—it’s a nice, calming, caffeine-free tea), and fill it up with hot water. I wrap my neck in the huge scarf, queue up my meditation podcast, close my eyes, and breathe. – Sadie Lincoln, CEO of barre3 and Editor in Chief of B3 Magazine
My best travel tip is cliché—but SO important. Drink water and lots of it. Traveling pushes our body into dehydration mode, especially via plane. Keep a water bottle handy: My favorite is a copper water bottle with a scoop of electrolytes and vitamin C powder for added immune-boosting properties. – Mckel Hill, Nutrition Stripped
Prepare for self-care during flights—especially when it’s a long haul! I always pack an ‘in-flight’ survival kit, loading a small packing cube with my favorites. Everyone’s kit is different, but mine includes favorites like Mario Badescu Facial Spray, Shiseido Eye Masks, a thick moisturizer or face mask, eye drops and lip balm. Then I pack it last, so it’s easy to find when I need it. – Shannon Kircher, The Wanderlust Effect
Make the most of your stay (hint: move… and relax!)
Exploring = exercise. Seeing a city on foot, or by bike, is a great way to find hidden gems—and sneak some exercise in at the same time. Wearing a Fitbit during a recent Toronto trip blew my mind! I typically rack up around 20,000 steps a day exploring a city on foot, and a Fitbit or similar device makes it fun and motivational. – Shannon Kircher, The Wanderlust Effect
I try to wrap my head around this: Being away is rest and free time. I don’t have to stick to a diet, a routine, or answer emails or texts right away. Those things will be there waiting when I get home. – Sara Forte, Sprouted Kitchen
Be flexible. Travel rarely goes as planned; unexpected events are out of your control—so don’t let it bring you down. Make it your mission to enjoy your getaway! You never know; some of the best memories I’ve made when traveling stemmed from unplanned situations. – Shannon Kircher, The Wanderlust Effect
