Sharing Our barre3 Purpose at The Fast Company Innovation Festival
Last week I was invited to speak at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, a four-day event dedicated to helping leaders find their mission and deepen their purpose. It was so inspiring to be around so many people rocking their A-game! Check out a few of the ideas I shared about purpose at barre3, plus my favorite takeaways from the festival.
Building a business with purpose means staying true to your “why.” My husband and I started barre3 with a very strong “why:” because we wanted to fill in where traditional fitness fails. Our purpose is all about empowering clients to connect their mind to their body for improved performance. For example, we’ve turned modifying postures into something that gives you better results. Before starting barre3 I hated modifying postures in group classes because I felt like it was the easy way out. I would power through moves that hurt my body and end up feeling depleted and uncomfortable in my own body. Today in our barre3 classes people proudly rock modifications in an empowered way that delivers BETTER results.
A strong purpose often transcends your product. Most exercise concepts are about what happens in the moment of exercising. At barre3 we are very different in that we think transformation actually happens when you aren’t exercising! Exercise informs the rest of your life—and that’s what’s important. Our workout ignites moments of self-discovery so you feel good in your own body and empowered to make wise choices. Even when you’re not exercising, the mind-body connection you build in class helps you do things at a higher and more productive level.
All innovators thrive when faced with a challenge of going beyond what we know. But it’s not always easy! I learned that across industries, innovators share some common practices that help us stay open to challenges. So many of us believe in the power of having a mindful practice to keep us self-aware, we listen with an open mind, and we strive for the balance between going with our gut and listening closely to data.
When you empower your team, they can truly shine—and that is the greatest reward any leader can ask for. I presented at Fast Company, but I also took class and hung out with my West Village studio director Dino Malvone. His class and his leadership style is incredibly inspiring. One of our core values is Humbly Confident, and the guy embodies this value through and through. I count him as one of my teachers helping to make me a better leader.
And my biggest takeaway from the Fast Company Innovation Festival? I learned how truly grateful I am to have the honor of leading this company of ours. We are more than a business—we are a movement. I am so very proud to be a part of it.
