- My motivation for this marathon is… inspiring my team. Last spring I recruited a group of barre3 friends to do a run called the Capital 10K. We trained together with runs after class, and I helped about 10 ladies run farther than they ever had before. I was inspired by their dedication. Right around that time, I learned about the EMC + barre3 partnership for the NY Marathon—and here I am!
- I’m running 26.2 for EMC because… I love what EMC stands for. I love that they help women both here in the U.S. and in third-world countries. I love that their support includes education, not just money.
- I’m a runner because… I ran my first marathon in 2004 and caught the running bug. I have run a total of nine marathons including Boston three times, NYC, Chicago, Nike Women’s in San Francisco, St. George, Austin, and Tulsa. A hip injury sidelined me from my fourth Boston, and then I got pregnant and opened barre3—so I’ve been busy! I’m excited to be getting back into running again.
- I’m most excited about… getting back to something I love and having time for myself during my runs.
- I’m most nervous about… not having enough miles under my belt. In my marathoning past I was able to stick to a regimented training program, but events over the summer prevented me from training the way I used to. I am confident that I will finish, but it will not be in the time that I am used to running.
- My pre-race ritual is… I don’t really have one!
- My barre3 practice has helped me by…. making my core super strong so my posture stays upright as I fatigue. I feel better running for longer.
- My favorite post-run meal is… I love breakfast after a race, regardless of the time of day. The Herbs + Eggs with a sliced avocado is a favorite b3 recipe of mine.

- My motivation for this marathon is… my four kids. They are my everything. I want to show them that even when things are hard, we move forward and keep trying. I want them to know that this mama never gives up.
- I’m running 26.2 for EMC because… running for a cause makes each mile seem easier. Knowing that I’m running for my mama friends and that it is allowing them access to better care and safer childbirth powers me through.
- I’m a runner because… I find it to be the best form of therapy. I’ve run several half-marathons, but this will be my first full marathon. I am eager for the day to come, but also terrified!
- I’m most excited about… finishing! I’m excited to meet the EMC team. I’m excited to see New York in this way. My husband and I are bringing our two oldest kids with us so they can see me complete this race. I can’t wait to share this with them!
- I’m most nervous about… my mind. If I let negative self-talk creep into my head when I’m running, the run goes downhill very quickly. I’m also nervous about falling—I’m not the most graceful person, so if I make it through without a fall, I will be so happy!
- My pre-race ritual is… the night before a run I always lay out my outfit. Like a schoolgirl. I lay it out on the floor in the shape of person, complete with my running shoes and headband. I place my number/bib on my shirt. It’s a little silly, but it makes me sleep better.
- My barre3 practice has helped me by…. Rebuilding my core. Barre3 has become my home away from home. The women I get to speak with daily are all amazing. They all know about the race and are always inspiring me to run farther. I am surrounded by such a caring community. Barre3 is truly an exceptional place to be. There’s magic there.
My favorite post-run meal is… a green smoothie. I run very early in the morning, so I’m usually starving afterward. A smoothie is a great post-workout snack because it’s filling but not heavy. The Green Detox Smoothie is one of my favorites! I am obsessed with ginger, and this smoothie has the perfect amount.
