In September, vacations wind down. Kids go back to school. Routines get established. After three months of summer, there’s a palatable clean-slate feeling that inspires us to start fresh—our September #b365 tip. Here are seven tips for giving yourself a fresh start right now.
Start your day with lemon water.
A cup of warm lemon water first thing in the morning gets your digestion going, delivers a host of electrolytes, and triggers your liver to release toxins. The hydrating and cleansing effects of a lemon-water routine make it a great way to refresh your body every day.
Make a list of priorities.
September is all about getting grounded and focusing on the things that matter most. But with the increasing schedule demands that arise in September, it can be easy to lose sight of what’s essential. Try making a list of the priorities that deserve your attention and refer to it throughout the month as a reminder. There’s power in writing things down!
Plan your meals.
On Sunday nights, try planning at least three healthy meals for the week ahead. That way, no matter what curve balls get thrown your way, you can count on three balanced meals to energize you and your family. If you’re tight on time, look into a service like Instacart to help with grocery shopping. And if you’re looking for inspiration, lean on us! Practice saying no.
In order to focus on your priorities, you may need to simplify your schedule and responsibilities. That requires saying no sometimes. A helpful habit for protecting your time is putting appointments on your calendar for doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes allowing yourself to just be, without any commitments, is the best way to recharge for the other parts of life.
Keep exercise on the list.
Moving your body energizes you so that you’re better equipped to handle the rest of your day. New York Magazine recently wrote about how exercise not only benefits physical health but also helps us perform better in all areas of life, including managing stress. Even pressing play for a quick 10 minute workout is enough to make a difference!
Focus inward.
September, because it marks the close of the extroverted energy of summer, is a perfect time to adopt a mindfulness meditation practice. By helping you bring awareness to the present moment, mindfulness meditation trains you to notice the patterns that might be holding you back so that you can make room for something fresh. If you’re struggling to fit in a regular mindfulness practice, try taking very brief in-the-moment timeouts to breathe deeply and recenter yourself.
Take it one week at a time.
If thinking about the whole month feels daunting, try taking things one week at a time. Or even one day at a time. In each moment, we have the opportunity to begin again.
