Studio Owner Spotlight: Julie Gordon
Julie Gordon is a woman on fire! Besides being a powerful leader, she’s also a force on the ski slopes. Today, Julie explains how a simple shopping trip led her to her dream job and shares how the barre3 Challenge is helping her bounce back from the holidays. Here’s Julie in her own words:
I’ll never forget how I discovered barre3. One day, I was shopping in Cherry Creek when I happened to walk past the studio, which was about to open. I remember there were big open windows and a beautiful, warm aesthetic to the place. Where did this come from? I wondered. On the way back to my car, my curiosity got the best of me and I stopped in to see what barre3 was all about. I came back for my first class on Monday as a client, and that was it—I was hooked. It felt so good to be working out, shaking like crazy, and developing friendships with so many like-minded people.
Of course, I had no idea back then how much barre3 would change my life. But when the opportunity presented itself for me to purchase the studio, I jumped at the chance and landed my ultimate dream job. I get emotional when I talk about being an owner, but as my clients know, to see their transformation and watch them grow and become so physically strong, well, that’s the best part of my job.
I’ve grown stronger as well—before barre3, I ran the Chicago marathon in 2009. I did it again in 2012 and had so much more power and endurance from my barre3 practice. I totally crushed it that year. I also love to ski with my boyfriend Peter, and now I have so much more confidence and control on the slopes. I don’t tire as easily and recovery is much quicker the next day. I feel like a total athlete now—here I am in Aspen!
After a day on the slopes, my go-to recipe is the Easy Red Bean and Quinoa Chili. It’s so filling, like a warm blanket that you just wrap yourself in. I’ve made it my own by adding a little greek yogurt and mint or cilantro along with some diced avocado on top. It’s a total crowd pleaser. And then there’s the barre3 truffles—I served some for our holiday party last year, and they were a huge hit.
This year, I had a pretty epic holiday—Peter and I went on an African safari. It was so incredible to see that part of the world and experience the culture there. Travel is a big part of my life, which can make it tricky to stay balanced and healthy. But I’ve found that whether I’m out with friends or on the road, moderation is the key to everything. That and moving all day, like busting out a 10-minute workout on a long layover.
It was really nice to come back from our trip and dive right into the barre3 Challenge. After you’ve been travelling, your body feels out of balance and your routine is thrown off. During this Challenge, I’m completely hitting the reset button and starting 2016 fresh and new. I’m not a morning person, so this month one of my goals has been to get to 6:00 am classes. (Mission accomplished!) There’s nothing better than taking class alongside clients and my instructor team—after all, we’re in this together.
It’s that realization—that we’re all in this together, whether it’s a challenge or just another day practicing barre3, that makes being part of this incredible community so great.
