I’ve always loved to exercise. Growing up, I was a gymnast and cheerleader. After high school, I tried everything: yoga, Pilates, group-strengthening classes, boxing, you name it. While I enjoyed all of it, nothing ever resonated with me on a deeper level. That soon changed once I tried barre3. I was visiting my parents in Portland, Oregon, and I decided to try a class with Sadie Lincoln. I fell in love.
Whenever I visited Portland, I’d take a barre3 class every day. I’d feel amazing, but then I’d eventually have to return to Tucson where there wasn’t a studio. Once barre3 Online launched, I was able to practice consistently. That’s when I saw major results. My low back and knee pain disappeared. My jeans got looser. The workout energized my body in such an incredible and different way, and the culture was something I wanted to be a part of.
For a little while I considered moving to Portland so that I could take barre3 classes. Then, it dawned on me. I thought, “Hey! I can bring this to Tucson!”
Before this big career change, I used to work as a nurse. I loved being able to help people, but in doing that, I neglected to take care of myself. I was exhausted, not sleeping well, and not eating right. Barre3 has helped me find that balance I was craving and desperately searching for. I feel grounded, healthy, and I manage stress better now.
When we feel super stressed, the first thing many of us want to do is grab a bag of chips. But that’s the worst thing to do. Instead when I’m overwhelmed, I go for a short walk, do a 5- or 10-minute online or app workout, or I make plans with a girlfriend to take class together. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter if I move for one minute or 60 minutes. I just need to move.
My mom and I have always been close, but barre3 has brought us closer. She and I take class together, and she works the front desk at my studio. My family has definitely noticed a change in me since I opened barre3 Tucson. They say I have more zest for life. I just feel so grateful that I can share something I love so much with everyone else.
This Thanksgiving, my family and I are taking class together. We’re also going to make some of the barre3 recipes. I’m in charge of the Roasted Chickpeas and Pumpkin Pie Mousse!
Barre3 has taught me how to listen to my body. Sure, I could do everything, always say yes, and be turbo, but then I wouldn’t feel good the next day. I know my limits. It’s ok to say no sometimes. It’s ok to hinge forward in Carousel Horse. That’s been a really important lesson for me to learn.
The best part of being an owner is being able to give back to the community. Nothing makes me happier than hearing from clients who have lost weight and experienced incredible results. I’m also proud to be able to support causes that are important to me. For example, I’ve held several donation classes for Cystic Fibrosis. As a barre3 owner, I’m now giving back to people in a different way than I did as a nurse. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
