Raise your hand if you’ve ever tried to do a barre3 online workout with your kids running/crawling circles around you (we’re picturing hands shooting up in unison all over the country right now!). Barre3 instructor, Vice President of Franchise Operations, and a mama of two herself, Harper, pulled out four moves you can do WITH your kids instead of in spite of them. Break these out on those days when you’re craving a quick burst of exercise but don’t have the time for a full workout. Bonus: Each move doubles as a fun game for the kiddos. A win-win!
Bridge Lifts
“One of the easiest moves to do with a baby is Bridge,” Harper says. Sit the baby on your hips, put your feet out to Sumo for added stability, and move your hips up and down. The baby will get a kick out of the silly ride, and you’ll get a turbo workout thanks to the extra weight on your hips. Keep it slow and controlled to work your body and keep baby safe.
Carousel Horse
Hold the baby on your chest and do a series of slow Carousel Horses. For a toddler, you can wear your kiddo in a carrier on your back for extra weight to work the glutes.
Breathing
Sigh deeply, take controlled inhales and exhales, play with your breath, or make funny noises—like blowing raspberries—to help you work your vocal chords and relax your whole body. “Baby will start to pick up on it and will emulate, so it’s good for both of you,” Harper explains.
For older kids, try turning on a 10-minute workout, press the “mute” button on the workout, and play their favorite music instead. Give them their own mat (or a towel), and challenge them to work out right alongside you. Poses including Downward Dog, Bridge, and Step Taps tend to be favorites with the mini set!
Our best tip for working out with your kids? Make it FUN. The goal isn’t to nail the workout, it’s to connect with your kids through movement. Get started with a 15-day free trial of barre3 online workouts today!
