DOES BARRE3 HAVE WORKOUTS THAT TARGET A SPECIFIC AREA?
The short answer to this question (which we get at least once a day!) is yes. Our new B3 Focus 10s Collection features short workouts that target a specific area of the body. We created these workouts specifically to focus on areas of the body that suffer from lack of use in our day-to-day lives.
But as with all short answers, there’s more to the answer than a simple yes or no. While our B3 Focus 10s are a fantastic way to work an area of the body that you feel could use a little extra care, they are meant to serve as complements to your regular barre3 practice. You’ll also notice that although these workouts focus one one area, they still involve the entire body, and they’re rooted in a balancing approach (for example, in the upper-body workouts you’ll notice that anytime you work your bicep, you’ll also work your tricep). This is because part of our mission at barre3 is to teach you to be balanced in body—and working your muscles in isolation doesn’t help you build balance in your body. Let’s dig into the why behind that.
Muscles don’t work in isolation
To understand this, it helps to consider how the body functions. Nearly every move we make—walking the dog, getting up out of a chair—requires effort from a network of muscles rather than from one isolated muscle group. Think of a simple motion like picking up a box off the ground. Although it may look like this motion engages primarily your arms, it actually requires several parts of your body to work together: your arms, your core, your glutes, and your legs. If you’ve worked to strengthen your arms but not the rest of your body, you risk injuring your back when you lift the box. But lifting it with a strong and balanced body that works in harmony? Now you’re talking.
Over-strengthening one area can throw everything out of whack
Even when you move a single body part, you need to engage several muscles. For example, to bend your arm, you need your bicep and tricep to work together. If you focus on strengthening just your biceps, you’re going to jeopardize the way they work with your triceps (not to mention your lats and your core). Strengthening one muscle and not the muscles around it leaves you more prone to injury, and you’ll compromise flexibility and mobility.
A better solution
All barre3 workouts use functional movement to help you build a strong, balanced body. Even when we create workouts that work key areas of your body, it’s always with the goal of helping them move in a fluid and balanced way with the rest of your body. For example, our Core 360 Collection works—you guessed it—your core, but in a way that engages the rest of your body as well, helping it all work together as one. And while our B3 Focus 10s target specific areas of the body, they are meant to be used in conjunction with traditional barre3 workouts—a bonus rather than a substitute. That way, you build a strong, balanced body in a safe and healthy way.
When should you use the Focus 10s?
As a complement to an existing barre3 workout. Just finished a workout and want to focus a little more on a specific area? Add this to your workout.
When you have just 10 minutes and want to nurture a specific part of your body. Maybe your upper back is feeling out knotted and out of whack from too much time hunched over a phone, or maybe you want to wake your glutes up after back-to-back Zoom calls. Our B3 Focus 10s are just the thing to counter these modern-day discomforts.
As a complement to your active lifestyle. Maybe you went for a run today and your lower body got a great workout, but you want to work your arms, too. Push play on the Upper Body Focus 10 to find the body balance you’re looking for.
