HOW AN INSTRUCTOR FOUND BODY POSITIVITY WITH BARRE3
When Alex Taylor first found barre3, she wasn’t looking for a fitness regimen or even necessarily a workout. She was looking for support. Alex had struggled with an eating disorder as a teenager, and one of the most important lessons she learned in recovery was that caring for her body in a way that worked for her was essential to her success.
“Recovery looks different for everyone,” Alex says. “For me, it was important to learn to take care of my body in a way that was balanced and healthy and to move with intention and to recognize where that intention was coming from.”
It was this focus that brought Alex to barre3. She began her journey as a client at barre3 North Scottsdale and felt so aligned with the workout and the company that she became an instructor. In addition to helping empower her clients in the studio, Alex also runs The Balanced Beautiful Body, an organization dedicated to promoting balanced wellness and building a community centered around body acceptance and positivity.
Below, Alex shares how barre3 supports body-positivity for every client, and how the lessons she’s learned in class have helped her throughout her own body-positivity journey. Spoiler: It all starts from within.
BARRE3 LETS YOU MAKE THE MOVES YOUR OWN
Over the course of my time as a client at barre3, I went through a lot with my health and ultimately had to take six months off from class. But quickly, I began to realize how much my body craved that movement.
Coming back, I worked my way up to taking 30 minutes of class, then 45, and then got to a place where I could stay for a full class. What kept me coming back during that challenging period was knowing that I could always make the class my own. I still felt so welcomed in class and loved having the freedom to meet myself exactly where I was without feeling judged by anyone else.
It’s amazing to see a room full of people all engaged in the same routine but to know that they’re taking modifications or going deeper into postures if that’s what their body needs. I’m inspired when I see other women honor their truth and feel empowered when I make choices because I’m listening to my body and deciding what’s right for me.
YOU DEVELOP AND HONOR THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION THROUGHOUT CLASS
It’s so important to establish the relationship between the mind and body. Our instructors offer cues that guide you to that connection, and by the end of class, you’ll feel a greater awareness of your body and what it can do. When my mind is in tune with my body, I’m reminded of how strong and resilient I am.
BREATHWORK GIVES YOU TIME TO REFLECT, PAUSE, AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR EFFORT
I love that we include breathwork at the end of each class. These moments of reflection are incredibly powerful, and giving yourself the time to listen to your internal dialogue and to notice the sensations your body has been feeling during the past 55 minutes is so important. It allows you to get quiet and thank yourself for the work you’ve done.
Practicing breathwork has brought so much calm to my life. It’s a tool that I can use throughout my whole day.
BARRE3 IS FOR EVERYONE
When you come to class, you’ll notice there isn’t just one type of person who walks into our studios. We have clients as young as 16, and recently, a woman in her eighties came to take a class with her granddaughters. It’s gratifying and humbling to see people in our studios of all ages and from all walks of life.
Why does all of this matter? “It all comes down to the fact that how you feel about yourself is the most important conversation you have with yourself. The way you show up for yourself is the way you show up for everyone around you: your family, your friends, and the people you come into contact with every day. The better we take care of ourselves, the better we can show up for everyone in our lives, ourselves included.”
